Infrared Detection

a practice of roof system analysis where an infrared camera is used to measure the temperature differential of a roof surface through measuring Infrared radiance to locate areas of underlying wet or moist insulation.

Allied Roofing Consultants specialize in performing Infrared Surveys/Inspections on low slope roofing applications in order to determine if entrapped sub strata moisture intrusion is present within the existing components of the roof assembly. An Infrared survey can also be performed on walls and fascia in order to determine if moisture is present within the walls or fascia and also to determine if the walls or fascia are properly insulated for energy conservancy purposes.

There are a wide variety of reasons for performing an Infrared survey. The most common reason we perform an Infrared survey is to determine whether or not entrapped sub strata moisture intrusion is present within the components of an existing roof assembly to determine whether or not that roof assembly is a suitable candidate for a recovery retro-fit roof system. If the quantity of entrapped sub strata moisture content is too high the existing roof assembly will need to undergo a complete tear off and re-roof because a recovery retro-fit roof system will likely fail prematurely. Another beneficial application for performing an Infrared on a low slope roof assembly is to determine if entrapped moisture is present within the existing components of a roof system which is still covered under a Contractor’s Workmanship warranty. Due to the likelihood that the saturated section of the roof system will ultimately fail an Infrared inspection can provide the proof necessary for the installing contractor to honor their warranty and remove any wet or saturated insulation that may compromise the waterproofing integrity of the roof system.

Infrared Thermography is a non destructive form of testing which can be performed without cutting into or damaging the surface of the roof assembly. An Infrared can be performed in a timely manor and can provide clear and precise insight on whether or not entrapped sub strata moisture is present as well as the amount of entrapped moisture being held in any given location. When insulation becomes saturated it not only poses serious problems with the roof system it also decreases the R-value or insulation value of the existing insulation.
